Materials You’ll Need
Creating graduation shirts with our designs is simple, even for beginners. Here’s what you’ll need:
- A sublimation printer with sublimation paper and sublimation ink, OR
- An inkjet printer with Heat Transfer Paper for Light Fabrics or Heat Transfer Paper for Dark Fabrics OR
- Infusible Ink sheets
- Cricut cutting machine or scissors
- Heat transfer tape
- A heat press (stationary or portable)
- Butcher paper for blowout
- Teflon sheet for heat protection
- T-shirt ruler for proper placement
- T-shirts (for sublimation or Infusible Ink, choose shirts with at least 60% polyester content)
How to Use These Designs
You can use these designs in a variety of ways with sublimation, heat transfer paper, DTF transfers, or infusible ink transfer sheets.
- For sublimation and infusible ink, use white 60+% polyester t-shirts.
- For heat transfer paper for light materials, use white cotton or blend t-shirts.
- For heat transfer paper for dark materials, use black or dark cotton or blend t-shirts.
If your shirts are made of dark fabric, you will need to cut the designs carefully with scissors, or with a Cricut or other brand cutting machine, to remove any excess around the designs. I recommend using heat transfer paper and a Cricut cutting machine if you want to set the designs on dark fabric.
You can also buy DTF transfers of the design mailed to you through online and local DTF Transfer vendors. Simply upload the design to your chosen vendor, and they will print and send the transfers to you.
For Sublimation or Infusible Ink:
- Print your chosen design on sublimation paper or use Infusible Ink sheets.
- Cut your design by hand or use a Cricut or other brand cutting machine for Infusible Ink and sublimated designs that will be pressed to dark fabric. (Sublimated designs for white t-shirts do not need to be cut.)
- Using the t-shirt ruler, position the design on the t-shirt and use heat tape to keep it in place.
- Place a piece or three of butcher paper on top of the design to catch any blowout.
- Place a sheet of Teflon over the butcher paper to help evenly distribute the heat across the shirt while pressing.
- Press with a stationary or portable heat press machine according to temperature and time specifications provided by the material manufacturer. Do not use a household iron with sublimation or Infusible Ink designs. Household irons are terrible at keeping a consistent temperature and rarely reach the temperature required for sublimation.
- Peel cool or hot, depending on the instructions from the material manufacturer.
For Heat Transfer Paper:
- Print your design on heat transfer paper for light or dark fabrics.
- Cut and weed the design with a Cricut or other brand cutting machine if your t-shirts are any color other than white.
- Position the design on your shirt using the t-shirt ruler.
- Place a piece of butcher paper on top of the heat transfer paper to catch any bleed.
- Cover the butcher paper with a Teflon sheet to protect and distribute the heat evenly.
- Press with a stationary or portable heat press, or household iron.
- Follow the material manufacturer’s instructions for cold or hot peel.
